Baklava


INGREDIENTS:

1 package phyllo pastry
1/2 cup unsalted melted butter
1/2 cup honey – warmed
1.5 cups crushed nuts ( walnuts ,almonds or pistachios , or a mix of all 3 )
1/4 cup lemon juice


DIRECTIONS:

Mix the crushed nuts with a 1/4 cup of honey and about 4 Tablespoons of lemon juice
Place 1 sheet of phyllo pastry and spread it gently on a large tray or wooden cutting board large enough for the sheet to fit.

With a pastry brush lightly smear sheet with melted butter.Place 2 more sheets on top, smearing each sheet with butter.

Place a 3/4 inch layer of nuts evenly along the shorter side of the sheets.
Roll the sheets into a tight tube starting from the shorter edge. Place the roll on to a 12 x 9 greased baking dish. Repeat with the rest of the pastry sheets. You should get 5 to 6 rolls.

With a sharp knife cut the rolls diagonally ( one and a half to 2 “ pieces )
Brush remaining melted butter on top and around the pieces. Bake at 325 C for 1 hr until top is golden brown.

Mix the remaining honey (warmed) with the remaining lemon juice and pour evenly over the baklava It should be completely coated with the honey mix. Sprinkle some crushed pistachios over it and let sit for 4 to 5 hours before serving.
